Sarah C. Smith
Editor | Proofreader
Hi, there! I’m Sarah. If you’re on the hunt for a nonfiction editor or proofreader, you’ve come to the right place.
Education and experience
While earning Bachelors degrees in English (Writing) and Letters from the University of Oklahoma, I worked as a writing tutor for the university honors college and as an editorial assistant at the University of Oklahoma Press.
As I moved on to complete my master of science in publishing from Pace University in New York, I moved up at OU Press, accepting positions as manuscript editor, rights and permissions manager, and, informally, social media manager.
I founded Arbuckle Editorial in 2017 so that I could do more of the work I’m most passionate about: collaborating directly with writers and publishers to ensure each sentence, each page of their books is polished and professional.
I’m a member of the American Copy Editors Society (ACES) and the Editorial Freelancers Association, and I take several editing courses per year through ACES and Copyediting.com to stay educated on conventions in the industry and special topics in academic and nonfiction editing.
What I can do for you
My in-house university press experience and my masters degree in publishing give me insider knowledge of the academic publishing industry.
Since I have worked in-house in project management and in rights and permissions in addition to editing and proofreading, I’m able to look at manuscripts and proofs from multiple perspectives. Will a particular change cause issues later in production? Are there red flags in a manuscript from a legal standpoint?
At the same time, I’ve written my own thesis, and I know how hard that is! While I’m familiar with the traditional publication process and the needs of publishers, I’m also a ready advocate for authors. I edit with a vigilant eye not just for grammar and style but for the author’s vision for their work.
If you’re on the hunt for an editor or proofreader, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
